Lonar Crater Lake – A Mysterious Lake in India

The Lonar Crater Lake in Maharashtra is full of mysterious stories. It is a crater and was created 50,000 years ago when a huge asteroid or comet at a speed of 80,000-90,000 km per hour crashed into earth and made a deep depression in the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra. Thus it is one among World’s only two natural craters. The lake is one of the top places to visit in Maharashtra.

The lake is also known as the Lonar crater. It is a National Geo-heritage Monument, saline, soda lake, and is located at Lonar in Buldhana district of Maharashtra. It also attracts many scientists around the world. 

Of-late, the color of the lake has turned into pink. It has surprised many locals, nature enthusiasts, and scientists. Some say there are algae present in the lake and that may have caused the water to turn pink.

Another claim suggests that there is no oxygen available below one meter from the surface. This must-have turned pinkish due to an increase in salinity. There is one such example of a lake in Iran.

This also may be a seasonal change or some natural phenomena.

Mysteries of the Lonar Crater Lake

There are many mysteries related to this lake which are still unresolved by the scientists across the globe:-

1.) The lake is alkaline and saline at the same time. The outer space of the lake water is neutral and the inner space is alkaline. This all makes a unique ecosystem of flora around the lake.

2.) Another mystery is that there are strong electromagnetic forces because a meteor hit the earth and the lake was made eventually. These forces interfere with electronic equipment and make them erratic.

3.) One more mystery is that the water of the lake contains various salts and sodas. Large quantities of soda are collected when the water levels are evaporated during the summer season where the atmosphere is dry. But there are two small streams, named Purna and Penganga, drain into the lake, and a well of fresh and sweet water is located on the southern side, close to the water’s edge. The source of this freshwater is still unknown and this page welcomes fresh water along with the salty water.

4.) The water in the lake is turning pink these days and the whole lake looks impressively pink. It’s because of the red algae generating in the lake recently.

The oval-shaped Lonar lake has some temples around which can be traced back to the 12th century. It also has a big belt of various wildlife and trees around. Its mystery is still unsolved and scientists are studying it to unravel the mystery.

Lonar Crater Lake is one of the most popular places to visit in Maharashtra. It is approx. 500 km away from Mumbai. Lonar village is not well connected to other cities. It would take around 9 hours from Mumbai and 8 Hours from Pune if you planned to travel by road.
